Psychology As Religion Book

Summer 2015 – Books & Culture: Psychology as Religion

Larry Dougherty

For the August installment of our Books & Culture presentations, George Weaver will lead a discussion on “The State of the Culture,” and Larry Dougherty will review the modern classic by Paul Vitz, “Psychology as Religion: The Cult of Self-Worship.”

A modern classic, Paul Vitz’s “Psychology as Religion” is a thoughtful critique of modern psychology and an indictment of the values of the “me generation.” Focusing on the popular theories that derive from secular humanism, Vitz, a distinguished Christian psychology professor at NYU, offers a careful analysis of the scientific, philosophical, ethical, and religious presuppositions that underlie much of modern psychology.

“This is the first book by a competent psychologist which analyzes the latest trends in the psychology of selfism over against the wider field of basic human values, personal and social.”
