A in-depth Sunday morning study of the most significant people, issues and events in Christian history
A History of Christianity in America is a study that highlights the major people, issues and events related to American Christianity from colonial times to the present. In addition to being an in-depth survey of Christianity in America, this series also focuses on the ongoing controversies over the proper relationship between church and state, and the challenges and opportunities of living in a society that is increasingly pluralistic, secularistic, and hostile toward Christian beliefs and values.

History of Charismatic Christianity and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
📄Outline: The Charismata in Scripture and Christian History
📄Intro — Judy Reamer — A Preface
In the next few weeks of our “History of Christianity in America” class, we will focus on the history of Charismatic Christianity and the gifts of the Holy Spirit as described in the New Testament and the writings of the early Church Fathers. We will also explore why these gifts are seldom referenced in Christian literature during the Medieval and Modern eras until their resurgence in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries.
This topic is both fascinating and occasionally controversial; however, as with all subjects we cover, we will approach it with careful consideration of the biblical, theological, and historical facts available to us.
Christian Nationalism
📄Christian Nationalism — The Battle for America’s Identity
📄Paul Atkinson — NAR Handout
Week 1 explores the complex and often misunderstood topic of Christian Nationalism. It covers the various interpretations of the term, its historical context, and its influence on American society and culture. Key points include the relationship between Christianity and nationalism, the rise of dominionism, and the influence of movements like the New Apostolic Reformation. The speaker also delves into the theological aspects of Christianity and how it has shaped American values, while debunking common misconceptions about the United States being a “Christian Nation.”
Week 2 Paul Atkinson continues the discussion on Christian Nationalism by focusing on the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and its impact on contemporary Christian movements. He examines the rise of Pentecostalism, the roles of Apostles and Prophets within the NAR framework, and the controversial practices of charismatic churches, particularly Bethel Church. Key topics include the theological debate surrounding cessationism versus continuationism, the prosperity gospel’s ties to NAR, and the movement’s political involvement, especially its connections to Christian nationalism and Dominionism. The video also addresses viewer questions regarding the scriptural basis for these beliefs and the nature of modern-day prophecies.
