One of the most enjoyable ways to broaden and deepen our understanding of the past is through the integration of history and the arts, and for much of the 20th century no cultural artform was more attuned to the times than popular music.
“American History Off the Record” takes us back to a time when the music mattered. This series, based on a course that Dr. Jefrey Breshears developed at Georgia State University, uses the popular songs of the times to illuminate our understanding of the mood of the country and the key events related to four formative periods in American history:
- World War I
- The Great Depression and the 1930s
- World War II
- The Sixties (1960-74)
Join us for this informative and entertaining series as we examine the history of each of these eras through the popular music of the time. A Study Guide including historical background information and song lyrics is available for each of these topics.
