The Magician’s Twin: C. S. Lewis on Science, Scientism, and Society

C. S. Lewis respected science, but he regarded scientism – the belief that science is the ultimate authority on all matters and the solution to all of humanity’s problems – as one of the great myths of our age. In books such as The Abolition of Man and That Hideous Strength, Lewis observed that scientism and magic are similar in three respects:

  1. Both function as alternative religions;
  2. Both discourage healthy skepticism by elevating “experts” and “authorities” to a level above criticism; and
  3. Both crave power. To the high priests of scientism, nothing is sacred – including human life itself.
