Technology and the Future of Christian Discipleship:
The Challenges and the Opportunities

Biblical ethicist Dr. Jacob Shatzer, an authority on the effects of technology on the human brain and contemporary lifestyles, challenges us to carefully consider both the phenomenal opportunities as well as the potential dangers of the technological revolution of the past 20 years and in the foreseeable future.

The hi-tech industry constantly bombards us with propaganda regarding the utopian future of humankind as advanced technology opens the gateway to evermore progress, productivity, specialized information and affluence. But the truth is that radical technological change also has the power to alter not only our lifestyles and priorities but also our minds.

Dr. Shatzer addresses the effects of technology on how we structure our lives and the correlation between technology addiction and Christian discipleship — including how we think, relate, and process reality. As he notes in his book, Transhumanism and the Image of God: “We cannot think about technology use today without considering who we will become tomorrow.”

This is a critically relevant issue for all thoughtful Christians, but especially for students and young adults.
